This company makes parachutes for airplanes. Not like the ones for people, a much bigger/stronger version for the plane itself. 
As a last resort in an emergency sitiation you can deploy the chute and float down to safety.

Check out the video section for some really sweet demonstrations. This would be a must-have if I owned my own plane. Someday. Funny though, someone has already sued them for device failure. As a kid, I remember wondering why this technology didn’t exist yet. I’m going to love to see the one they make for a 747.
