To Paint or Not To Paint…
… that is the question — between me and the wife. I had this idea to paint the foyer a darker color - you know, to help separate it from the rest of the bigger room it's attached to. The foyer, if you can even call it that, is a little alcove off the "great room." Prior to painting it, it didn't really stand out as much of anything. My idea was that if we painted it a different color, we could make it appear almost like another smaller room, giving it more emphasis. The wife didn't agree and had reservations about my "brilliant" idea. Well, when she was at work yesterday, I had a couple of hours to make "a run for it." I grabbed some paint and went to town. I had the thing done in a few hours, cleaned up, and got everything back in its place. When she got home, she didn't even notice!
Anyway, take a look at the picture attached to this post (before and after) and let us know what you think… Did the thing look better before or after? Paint or no paint?
You guys judge… I figure objective views would help paint a more accurate picture (or, foyer, in this case).

Something about the changing colors without a physical border (corners don’t count) disturbs me. Say there was some vertical strip (like molding although I don’t think molding would work in this case) that separated the foyer so that the paint ended there.
I think I’d like it better after I got used to it. We have something like this in our house. Didn’t care for it at first but after a time I got used to it.

I agree. I like the color and the look of it but, you need something to transition it from wall to wall, color to color. They have nice corner beads now that almost look like they’re carved and stuff. That’s my suggestion… decorative corner beads on the two corners… full height. pre-paint them and use tiny finish nails and you won’t even need to caulk, etc.

so your experiment has left me sitting here on vacation in my own hovel wondering if I too should be making a run to Lowe’s to paint that wall over there that doesn’t look quite right. I am certain I could keep this up until sunday. but back to your dilemma, the color looks great. I wouldn’t have thought that ending the new color on a corner would be so controversial! I say leave it.

corner bead = yawner feed The color is great, dark is almost always better and it gives the foyer a voice. Plus it seems you get more visual stimulation from the seating area. You can go totally off the wall and paint your ceiling a different color. The fifth wall gets no respect.
